We all struggle with that little voice inside that loves to downplay everything we do. We aren't good enough, pretty/handsome enough, we didn't succeed in what we wanted, etc. The list could go on for miles and miles, right?!
Here's the thing, though: negative self talk may not even be true more than 95% of the time! We get caught up in a story that is completely fabricated by our ego or what someone else said to us. How do I know this? Because it's painful and makes us suffer when we believe it, and that, my friend, is a sign that it's not coming from a place of consciousness, it's from a place of negativity.
So if the thoughts aren't true, how do we move forward? One process that has really helped me is Byron Katie's process called The Work. In my new meditation series SoulFeed, I go deep into this process in one of the meditation sessions. As a preview of the session, here are two ways that can help you get out of your head and into reality:
Ask yourself: Is it true? Can I know with certainty that it's true?
These two questions are really powerful when you meditate on them. In order for them to work, though, you have to get honest and still. The mind will love to say things like "yes, I'm a slob and I I know I'm a slob!" but you when you really sit with that thought, you find that you actually can't call it absolutely true. Why? Because you have a job, or a family, or friends who are around you and love you and they wouldn't be there if you were a 'slob'.
The thought may be, "I'm not a good person". But when you question that thought, you may start to realize that you have helped a lot of people, or made people smile, or any number of things similar to that. So you can't really confirm that you're not a good person!
This isn't an ego boost, by the way. I'm not asking you to create a false idea of yourself. This is a deep meditation of getting the mind back to reality and out of negativity. When you question the thoughts you're believing that aren't based in truth, then it takes you out of the irrational mind and into presence.
